Certain characteristics of violent encounters are predictable - they are intense, uncertain, and rapidly-evolving. Law enforcement personnel must prepare for and respond to these challenges, from assaults on officers to ambush situations, as they continue to pose a very real threat to officer safety. This one day practitioner course will provide participants with detailed examinations of serious force encounters so that they might better recognize and adapt to them in the future. Through a series of reality based exercises that simulate violent encounters within a controlled tactical environment, students will experience firsthand the kinds of perceptual distortions and heightened stress reactions that officers involved in these encounters have experienced. Awareness of pre-attack offender conduct will be examined in light of officer responses, verbal directions, evolving threats, and weapon use. Other topics to be addressed include: - What the courts and Illinois law say about use of force - Myths and misconceptions regarding the use of force - Stress during serious force encounters - Physiological impacts on an officer's response to stress - Performance of police weaponry - The impact of time framing - What Hollywood movies never show & public perceptions of what police do BRING PROTECTIVE GLOVES, LONG SLEEVE SHIRT AND DUTY BOOTS This course will be taught by retired Sgt. Bernie Hogancamp, Homewood Police Dept., Officer Patrick Siemsen, Homewood Police Department, and Officer Eric Stahmer, Blue Island Police Department.
