This program is designed for the criminal investigator, crime scene analyst, medical examiner personnel and prosecutors and is comprised of one day of classroom training and two days of field exercises. Through the use of lecture, slides, hands-on examination of skeletal material and demonstrations, students will become familiar with the techniques used in searching, excavating, and recovering skeletal human remains and associated evidence. Students will study the bones of the human skeleton and which of these bones are most beneficial in determining the age, sex, and race of the individual. Examples of actual criminal cases utilizing these techniques will be demonstrated throughout the seminar. Students will be given ample opportunity for hands-on exercises in order to become familiar with the human skeleton. During field exercises, students will participate in the excavation and recovery of skeletal material and associated evidence from mock scenes and burials. Students will also participate in group presentations utilizing slides of their mock scenes and burials. Written and practical examinations will be given at the end of the program. **The subject matter of this course falls within the key training guidelines for the in-service training requirements for Lead Homicide Investigator.** This course has been certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.
