The number of individuals, including teens and predators, who are using social networking sites continues to rise steadily across the nation. As a result, parents and communities are becoming increasingly aware of the vulnerability of all children who access these sites. Additionally, users of MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter have depicted evidence, through dialog and/or pictures and videos they have posted on-line, of criminal offenses they have committed. Through the use of the Suburban Law Enforcement Academy's Mobile Computer Lab, students will gain first hand experience in navigating through social networking sites, investigating on-line targets, and successfully building a complete case that can ultimately be presented to local prosecutors for charging. Topics to be addressed include: - How MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter work - Ways in which social networks can help a case - Law enforcement advantages to social networking - Creating undercover MySpace accounts - Accessing "private" social network pages - The Electronic Communications and Privacy Act (ECPA), including searching, seizing, and analyzing computers in computer-related investigations - Searching social networks within particular jurisdictions for crimes that may have occurred - Obtaining evidence from these sites using SNAG IT PLEASE NOTE: STUDENTS MUST HAVE AN E-MAIL ADDRESS THAT THEY CAN ACCESS REMOTELY IN ORDER TO ATTEND THIS CLASS. **Cancellations for this program must be received by NEMRT 35 days prior to the start of class in order to avoid being billed.
