This one day class is specific to police to help officers understand someone who is developing a mental health problem or who is experiencing a mental health crisis. Just as CPR training helps a person without medical training assist in individual having a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid training helps an officer assist someone experiencing a mental health crisis. The National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare's course is being taught throughout the U.S. as a primary help model for professionals. It will raise the bar for all first responders to follow. Studies have found that those who trained in Mental Health First Aid have greater confidence in providing help to others. Officers will learn: * Potential risk factors and warning signs for a range of mental health problems, including: depression, anxiety/trauma, psychosis and psychotic disorders, eating disorders, substance use disorders, and self-injury; * A 5-step action plan encompassing the skills, resources and knowledge to assess the situation, to select and implement appropriate interventions, and to help the individual in crisis connect with appropriate professional care; * An understanding of the prevalence of various mental health disorders in the U.S. and the need for reduced stigma in their communities; * Working knowledge of the appropriate professional, peer, social, and self help resources available to help someone with a mental health problem treat, manage, and achieve recovery. This course is taught through a special program provided by Linden Oaks at Edward Hospital. Each student receives a comprehensive workbook as part of this program. It is recommended as supportive for departments wishing to enhance their response to persons in crisis, persons with mental illness, or drug/alcohol dependencies. This program would also be supportive of a Crisis Intervention Team (C.I.T.) initiative by any police department. The instructors for this course have been trained by the National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare, and will include an experienced police officer, Barry Groesch, Yorkville Police (ret.) and Doctor of Psychology Charla Waxman.
