The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently conducted an audit of the Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) training program in Illinois and determined that training entities have not always provided consistent instruction throughout the state. In response, the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board (ILETSB) instituted policies and procedures to ensure consistency in SFST training. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) also required SFST refresher training for officers working patrols funded by grants. The goal of this course is to provide SFST instructors with the latest NHTSA curricula. Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to conduct SFST Instructor, DUI Detection, and SFST training programs for academies and SFST Refresher classes for anyone requesting them. This four hour block of instruction will enable law enforcement personnel to meet the requirements of the ILETSB and IDOT. A comparison of the 2006 SFST manual and the 2013 manual will be given to each student to provide them with historical background of the evolution of this training. Class will focus on the new 2013 manual and the changes that have been made in the SFST curriculum. A detailed presentation on Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, the Walk and Turn Test, and the One Leg Stand Test will also be given. Finally, participants will also be introduced to the NHTSA 4 and 8 hour SFST Refresher courses.
