The goal of this program is to provide investigators with the skills necessary to collect and preserve bloodstain evidence and effectively integrate it into their cases. It provides the foundation for investigators to identify collect, and handle bloodstain evidence in any criminal case. Students will be given detailed explanations of the most up-to-date, scientifically sound methods for identifying, documenting, and collecting bloodstain evidence encountered by law enforcement crime scene service units. It will build upon basic blood evidence training students receive in standard 40 Hour Basic Evidence Technician courses and will introduce advanced methods for interpreting and processing such evidence. The lecture portion of this program is minimal so students can maximize time spent on hands-on exercises meant to build upon practical skills that will be immediately applicable on the job. Topics to be addressed include: • Safety precautions to be taken when working with bloodstain evidence • Identifying bloodstain evidence • Documenting bloodstain evidence • Photographing bloodstain evidence • Sketching bloodstain evidence • Chemical enhancement of bloodstain evidence • Collecting blood stain evidence Upon completion of this program students will have an enhanced awareness of how bloodstain evidence provides information as to types of weapons used, minimum number of blows struck, movement before and after bloodshed, and victim / offender positions before, during and after bloodshed. STUDENTS MUST BRING A DEPARTMENT-ISSUED CAMERA WITH MACRO LENS, THE INSTRUCTIONAL MANUAL FOR THE CAMERA, A TRIPOD, ELECTRONIC FLASH, SYNC CORD, CABLE RELEASE, MEMORY CARD, FLASHLIGHT, AND A SCIENTIFIC CALCULATOR TO CLASS.
