Handcuffing can range from the cuffing of a totally cooperative subject to cuffing a combative individual who is actively fighting with the officer and everything in between. This course is designed to provide department trainers with the skills needed to successfully and safely instruct their department personnel on determining when to handcuff as well as a variety of techniques for cuffing from standing and prone positions, from wrist locks, and from ground control techniques. Topics to be addressed include the following: - Preparation, planning, and equipment considerations related to handcuffing - Using proper and safe approach procedures when making initial contact - Properly arrest a felon while using appropriate commands, procedures, and techniques - Determining formulas for both common wrist locks and steel wrist locks and transitioning between the two - Cooperative subject handcuffing - Uncooperative subject handcuffing - Handcuffing the combative subject - Determining when each technique would be appropriate - Handcuffing from the subject’s vehicle PLEASE NOTE: Students are required to bring chain link (NO HINGED) handcuffs and duty leathers to class. They should dress appropriately for practical cuffing exercises.
