Illinois ranks as one of the top 3 states that does not report quantitative numbers to the federal government for juvenile interactions. In many ways, the focus has moved away from engagement with juveniles and their parents/guardians and instead, the emphasis is placed on punitive measures including ticketing, arresting and booking. The legislative intent of the Juvenile Court Act of 1987 was to encourage juvenile officers to act as advocates for the juveniles they encounter. This class will educate juvenile officers on the use of restorative justice and station adjustments, whether formal or informal, when victimization is involved. Students will go in-depth as to the steps for meaningful diversion that will have a positive impact on not only the juvenile, but the parent/guardian as well. **Students must be a certified juvenile officer, certified SRO, or certified juvenile detective to attend this course. **Students must bring a PC or MAC laptop—iPads and Chrome Books WILL NOT WORK. IMPORTANT please read carefully: The attending Officer/School Official will need the following items: 1. Laptop Computer (Please open the laptop a day before, start it and go on on line so it can update) (chromebooks and IPads will not work with the tools provided ) 2. Be able to access your WORK email remotely from your laptop computer. 3. Be able to download Snag (NO CREDIT CARD REQUIRED) it on a 30 day free trial https://www.techsmith.com/download/
