This two day, 16 hour course has been designed to push beyond the basics of investigating crimes involving children. Through intensive analysis of case vignettes, students will explore more advanced investigative techniques, including timelines, the use of technology, use of non-traditional resources, and networking to enhance case development. Seasoned Detectives and an expert in the forensic interviewing of children will guide students through reviews and discussions regarding actual cases and the decisions that were made as the cases were conducted. Topics to be addressed include the following: - Available resources which will aid their cases involving crimes against children - The role that Children’s Advocacy Centers play in these investigations - The pace of juvenile investigations, including when to detain suspects, when to wait, and the consequences of moving either too slow or too fast - Evaluations of successful and unsuccessful approaches - The role of technology in juvenile investigations - Search warrants - Best evidence practices and obstacles that may be encountered - Establishing a network of resources, including Cellebrite, RCFL, Search.org, SANE programs, and CAPU - Working as a team to overcome obstacles This course has been certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.
