This program is designed for recently-assigned evidence technicians or those officers who desire an introduction to the tasks and responsibilities of an Evidence Technician. Students will be provided with the basic knowledge and skills needed to identify, process, collect, and preserve various types of evidence. Course topics include: - Crime scene management and search methods - Officer safety at the crime scene - Evidence recognition, collection, preservation, and packaging - Crime scene photography and basic photographic concepts - Toolmark and firearms evidence - Latent print development & AFIS technology - Footwear, tire track, and impression evidence - Evidence documentation - DNA and body fluid evidence - Trace evidence recognition and collection Students should wear appropriate casual clothing for practical exercises conducted both inside and outdoors. PLEASE NOTE: clothing may become soiled or damaged during these exercises due to weather conditions and/or chemicals. Students are asked to bring the following equipment to the FIRST day of class: - Digital camera (digital SLR preferred) with lens and instruction manual - Batteries for camera and flash - Digital media - Off camera flash, instruction manual, and remote flash cord (to connect to camera) - Tripod (if available) - Flashlight - Basic latent processing kit. **The subject matter of this course falls within the key training guidelines for the in-service training requirements for Lead Homicide Investigator.** This course has been certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board and is not reimbursable by the ILETSB.
