This 1 day, 8-hour program is intended to increase officer awareness of the importance of understanding law enforcement use of force and the applicable law and case law governing force. This understanding must be at a level that enables officers to exercise good judgment regarding the objectively reasonable standard and employ force in a lawful and reasonable manner. It was designed by a veteran officer, supervisor and instructor with extensive experience in the use of force and instructing use of force issues as a patrol officer, training officer, supervisor, detective, investigations supervisor and as an experienced instructor. Review of applicable federal and state statutes, case law, and policies will provide student officers with the knowledge needed to understand the critical legal standards necessary to perform as police officers in a lawful, ethical and effective manner. Other use of force-related topics to be covered in this program include: -Procedural justice, de-escalation, disengagement, tactical patience, and perception challenges -Human performance as it relates to force use and judgement, including time framing, time to start/time to stop, perseveration, visual narrowing, inattention blindness, and memory challenges in violent events -Pre-event preparation issues, including an overview of "Left of Bang" concepts and behavior analysis -Force documentation, articulation, and the importance of story-telling techniques to accurately describe behavior This course has been certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board and is not reimbursable by the ILETSB.
