This 1-day, 8-hour program has been designed by Sergeant John Hutson to provide instructor training in the use of an expandable or straight baton. This class will provide students with instructor level training in the use of an ex-pandable baton, a one-piece straight baton, or any other manufacturer’s department-approved baton. Students will study and practice techniques that will enable them to control, through the use of an expandable baton, resistant subjects. Instruction will focus on giving the student proper teaching methods in order teach the four-hour basic expandable baton course at their department only. Participants will be provided with proper expandable baton nomenclature and will identify striking areas as highlighted in the Escalation of Trauma Baton Chart. Topics to be addressed include the following: • Use of force discussion, review of 720 ILCS 5/7-5 • Teaching methods • Baton nomenclature and escalation chart • Balance, stance, and patterns of movement • Grips and methods of carry • Blocking and striking • Baton draws and retention • Instructor teach backs PLEASE NOTE: Students should wear appropriate workout attire and bring their duty belts and department-issued expandable batons with them to class. There are no prerequisites for this program.
