This 16-hour class is part of The Ground Fighting Control Tactics Series (GFCT). This course has been designed to teach students how to defend themselves when they accidently fall or have been pushed or tackled to the ground. Officers will learn the guard position in order to defend themselves against a much larger and stronger opponent. Topics to be covered include: • 720 ILCS 5/7-5 Peace Officer’s Use of Force When Making an Arrest • Use of Force Decision Making • Fighting Principles • Positional Control • Punch Block Control • Submission Holds • Weapon Retention • Handcuffing Skills Both instructors are retired police supervisors with extensive knowledge of ground fighting maneuvers and control tactics. This course has been carefully examined to stay in accordance with the changes made to 720 ILCS 5/7-5 (Peace Officers Use of Force When Making an Arrest) brought forth through the SAFE “T” Act. Officers will be taught to handcuff from a position where they will NOT sit on a subject’s head, or place knees on a person’s neck or back which may interfere with their availability to breathe. PLEASE NOTE: Officers are required to wear workout clothing. NO AMMO OR FIREARMS WILL BE ALLOWED INTO THE TRAINING FACILITY. Gun belts are optional. Students must sign waivers on site in order to participate and attend. The GFCT series consists of nine end user classes and three instructor level courses. The instructor team recommends attending all end user classes before attending instructor level training. To optimize the learning process, it is highly recommended (not required) to attend the classes according to the following tier system: Tier 1: Ground Fighting Control Tactics (16 Hour-The Guard Position) Tier 2: GFCT: Takedowns and Escorts GFCT: Escaping Neck Restraints GFCT: Escaping Grips and Grabs Tier 3: GFCT: The Mount Position GFCT: The Side Control Position GFCT: The Back Control Position Tier 4: GFCT: Sweeps and Reversals GFCT: Vehicle Extractions and Team Tactics GFCT: Instructor Development GFCT: Instructor Sustainment GFCT: Instructor Apprenticeship This course has been certified through the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board. It is not reimbursable by ILETSB.
