Highly violent incidents, including deliberate ambushes and attacks against law enforcement officers and citizens by offenders armed with long guns, have caused police agencies to make centerfire rifles and carbines standard patrol/emergency response equipment. This intensive three-day course is designed to give patrol officers, firearms instructors, and special weapons users a solid foundation in and understanding of the tactical application of rifle/carbine systems in law enforcement activities. This course provides prerequisite training needed for the state-certified NEMRT 40 Hour Police Rifle/Carbine Instructor program. Officers who have attended previous rifle/carbine courses are encouraged to attend as an update and refresher. Through classroom instruction and hands-on training, students will review: -Deployment -Use of Force statutes and updated legal issues related to police use of firearms. -Safe weapon handling, operation, and deployment in high-stress police field operations -Care, cleaning, and maintenance of the firearm -Disassembly, reassembly, and basic armorers' considerations -Accessory equipment including optics, flash suppressors, and compensators -Updated information on sound suppressors for SWAT and Tactical Officers -External and terminal ballistics of the .223 (556 m/m), and pistol caliber rounds -Selecting the types of bullet configurations that apply to different tactical situations. -Position shooting including use of cover/concealment. -Close-quarter shooting skills -Tactical deployment issues of the rifle/carbine Upon completion of this program, student officers will have been trained to employ the rifle/carbine safely and effectively in law enforcement applications. Please Note: This course does not provide certification as a rifle instructor. Required Equipment and information: -Duty handgun and duty belt -100 rounds handgun ammunition -AR-15/M-16/M-4 Rifle or Carbine (preferred), .223/5.56 m/m -3 or more 30 round magazines -Magazine pouches/means to carry extra magazines -1000 rounds of .223/5.56 m/m ammunition--factory ammo in either commercial or military configuration. NO GREEN TIP 62 GRAIN 5.56 m/m STEEL CORE AMMO -Eye and ear protection are MANDATORY and no one will be allowed on the range without both items. -Knee pads are highly recommended, elbow pads optional. -Cleaning equipment (rod, bore brush, chamber brush, patches, solvent, lubricant) -Sling -MANDATORY -Scope/red dot or magnified optic -optional -Notebook and pen -Baseball type cap with bill is MANDATORY for protection against hot brass -Appropriate clothing for weather – long pants only – no shorts. -Students should wear comfortable boots and bring sun block and/or rain gear, if necessary. -Food and drink in a cooler for breaks and lunches. Every officer attending this course must receive a copy of this course outline to ensure that they are properly equipped.
