This course teaches Police Training Officers (PTO’s) to train new recruits utilizing a Problem-based Learning model. Those attending will learn how to train the new recruits, incorporating contemporary adult education methods and problem-solving approaches. Traditional duties of policing are still emphasized, but with a variety of methods requiring the recruit to invest in learning the job in more meaningful ways. This approach results in confident, competent personnel who have flexible and adaptable knowledge and problem-solving skills. PTO’s challenge recruits to think creatively and are encouraged to use community resources to respond to crime or maintain order in the community. ** A laptop or tablet, with the ability to connect to WiFi/Internet is needed for this course ** Evaluations take place in a number of ways, including: - Informal assessments of daily activities - Utilizing journal entries and dialogue - Weekly Training Evaluation and Planning Reports (TEPR) - Phase-specific Training Plans and Evaluations (PSTPE) within a four-phased training program - Capstone Project - Intermediate and Final Progress Check-rides - Board of Evaluators assessment of trainee Comprehensive learning manuals, forms, processes and recommendations are given to all participants in order to assist in transitioning from a traditional field training model to this Problem-based Learning model. This course has been designed by James Wagner and Associates, LLC to the highest standards of training and legal defensibility. The program is designed to be “off-the-shelf” with little additional work required from the implementing agency. This course has been Certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.
