This one-day, 8 hour program has been designed by Chief (ret.) Jeffrey Chudwin, J.D., Deputy (ret.) Kimberly Heath-Chudwin and Chief (ret.) Daryl Howell to train student officers how to select and properly mount duty handgun pistol optics – know as RDS or Red Dot Sights. The current trend in the adoption of these duty RDS - pistol optics requires the ability to understand the mechanical issues related to the mounting or securing of the optics to the pistol slide. Repeated failures of these optics due to improper installation has been observed in current law enforcement handgun skills classes that the authors currently instruct through the MTU system. Upon completion of this course of study, the student officer will have the foundation knowledge of the required tools and specifications to properly mount and maintain the duty handgun RDS-optic. Additionally, the student officer will engage in a series of duty handgun courses of fire that illustrate the usefulness and effectiveness of the duty handgun RDS- pistol optic. These drills will enhance the student officer’s ability to effectively and accurately respond to variable distance deadly force threats; from close quarters to extended distance as may be found in schools and large workplace locations. Shooting skills that focus on safe and effective firearms handling under stress are combined with the understanding of current legal standards, legislative training mandates, and the foundation legal, ethical, and tactical concepts of the use of deadly force. This training establishes foundation defensive firearms skills that enhance the student officers use of deadly force decision making abilities and tactical first responder skills using the duty handgun equipped with the RDS – pistol optics during law enforcement duties.
