This course is the fourth level in a series of traffic crash investigation courses provided by NEMRT. The emphasis of this course is to build upon the theories and techniques learned in NEMRT’s Basic Traffic Crash Investigation-Level 1 and Traffic Crash Investigation–Level 2 & Advanced Traffic Crash Investigation-Level 3 courses. This course assists students further in understanding vehicle dynamics. Students will take part in a more intense study of time/distance calculations, two-dimensional momentum and impact speed calculations using momentum equations. • Derivation and origin of the commonly used speed formulas • Speed of vehicles at impact using conservation of linear momentum • Behavior of vehicles in a collision using Newton’s three laws of motion • Discussions of commercial vehicle and motorcycle dynamics in collisions • The determination of direction of travel, initial contact and position of vehicles on the roadway This course includes extensive project work to give you first-hand experience in crash reconstruction. Each student will be required to diagram and analyze several different crash scenarios as well as complete vector sum analysis of each. Prerequisite Students must have completed NEMRT’s Basic Traffic Crash Investigation-Level 1 and Traffic Crash Investigation-Level 2 and Advanced Traffic Crash Investigation-Level 3, or its equivalent, for attendance in this course. To satisfy the prerequisite requirement for equivalency, students may be required to provide documentation for evaluation prior to final acceptance in this course. Required equipment to bring to class: • Scientific Calculator with square root, sine/co-sine, and parentheses () functions • Metal Compass • Work clothes for outside activities (including inclement weather) Recommended equipment to bring: • Camera and equipment to document field exercises • 100 ft steel tape measure • A Three-ring binder for handouts will be provided by NEMRT the first day of class. Students should review all formulas and work from the required prerequisite courses prior to class. All course material and instructors will be provided by the Institute of Police Traffic Management, University of North Florida. Initial registration will be limited to NEMRT member agencies; a waiting list will be established for non-members. Successful completion of the series of all four NEMRT Traffic Crash Investigation courses will put the student in position to apply to take the ILETSB Crash Reconstruction Specialist Examination. This course has been certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board and is not reimbursable by the ILETSB. ****Cancellations for this program must be received by NEMRT 35 days prior to the start of this class.*****
