Street gangs continue to pose significant problems for communities across the United States. Many police departments lack the resources needed to run specialized units that specifically address violence and other criminal gang activity. As a result, patrol officers and street supervisors are heavily relied upon to monitor and suppress criminal gang activity, enforce the law when necessary, and gather intelligence regarding gang affiliation and criminal practices. This class will provide police personnel with strategies for controlling gang activity and reducing gang crime within their respective communities. Topics to be addressed include: - Writing search warrants for gang and narcotic cases - Interviewing gang members - Building successful gang cases This class has been certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board. It is not reimbursable by the ILETSB. Instructor Marc Vanek is currently a Sergeant in the Chicago Police Department’s Gang Investigation Division. Prior to being promoted, he was a detective for the Chicago Police Department's Gangs Section. He has worked in gang infested areas such as the former Chicago Public Housing complex of Cabrini Green and is currently assigned to Chicago's west side. He has been involved in gang enforcement on many levels, from shootings and homicide investigations to local and federal gang-related weapon and narcotic investigations. As a violent crime detective, Sgt. Vanek has investigated several hundred shootings and homicides related to gang violence. He has written numerous search warrants ranging from standard weapon and narcotic search warrants to search warrants for Facebook, controlled buys, body cavity, vehicles, documents, computers and cellular phones. Sgt. Vanek is a State of Illinois-certified Lead Homicide Investigator and decorated member of the Chicago Police Department with countless awards stemming from his work on gang crimes.
