This two day arson investigation course will address the need for police officers to recognize that key evidence can be found at arson scenes and what steps are necessary to identify, collect, preserve, and submit such evidence to the crime lab. Topics to be addressed include: - Motives and methods associated with arson - Considerations of first response and preliminary investigations - Accelerants and basics of fire chemistry - Heat transfer and convection, radiation, and direct flame - Phases of burning - Fire conditions, including flashover and backdraft - Indicators of origin and/or cause - Suspect patterns and profiles - Support agencies and services **The subject matter of this course falls within the key training guidelines for the in-service training requirements for Lead Homicide Investigator.** This course has been certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board and is not reimbursable by the ILETSB.
