Police officers all over the world are facing increased public scrutiny over the use of force in highly emotionally-charged and potentially violent situations. The public has come to expect the police to exhaust other alternatives before resorting to physical force This interactive one day course is designed to provide law enforcement personnel with beneficial communication techniques that can be used when interacting with individuals who are in states of crisis. In many cases, use of these techniques will enable law enforcement personnel to avoid escalation that might necessitate the use of force. Students will participate in Active Listening scenario-based exercises that will hone their ability to identify the contextual and emotional cues that facilitate effective Emotion Labeling when speaking with persons in crisis. Topics to be addressed include: - The crisis communication process, including identification of needs and losses - The qualities of a good communicator - The importance of good crisis communication in the current law enforcement climate - Issues that affect communication in crisis situations, including hot button words, timing, body language, and emotional stress - Cognitive Overload and how it relates to the crisis communication process - The 7 Active Listening skills and the role they play in effective crisis communication - Empathy and witness/victim perceptions This program has been certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board. It is not reimbursable by the ILETSB.
