This program focuses on cultivating and utilizing confidential informants, as well as the techniques used to prepare them for use in police investigations. Through active lecture, students will identify persons who become informants, what motivates their participation, treatment considerations, and how informants can be used to solve ANY type of case, not just those involving narcotics. Participants will view videotaped interviews with actual long term informants that will provide valuable insights into the confidential informant's thought processes, motivations, etc. Practical exercises conducted at the end of class will enable students to put into practice many of the confidential informant handling skills covered in class. Topics to be addressed include: - Recognizing the necessity of confidential informants - Techniques for cultivating confidential informants - Determining the motivations of potential informants - Debriefing techniques - Administrative considerations - Proper uses of informants - Problem avoidance when using informants - Developing "cover stories" for confidential informants - Proper informant payment documentation - Avoiding "entrapment" issues when using informants - Preparing informants to testify in court when necessary Students who have previously attended the 40 Hour Basic Narcotics Investigator Course will have already covered the above material in the informant portion of that course. **The subject matter of this course falls within the key training guidelines for the in-service training requirements for Lead Homicide Investigator.** This course has been certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards board and is not reimbursable by the ILETSB.
