This new program has been designed to provide telecommunications personnel with the information and skills needed to provide safe and optimal service to victims of domestic violence. Through detailed discussion and analysis of actual calls, the emotional and mental status of domestic violence victims will be explored, as will ways in which telecommunicators can augment the safety of victim callers. Students will also examine the role they play in ensuring the safety of officers responding to high risk domestic violence-related calls. Topics to be addressed include the following: - Different types of domestic abuse - Why victims don’t leave - The Illinois Domestic Violence Act and Orders of Protection - The role of police in domestic violence-related calls - The puzzle pieces of dispatch This class has been certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.
