This two day, sixteen (16) hour training program has been specifically designed by North East Multi-Regional Training, Inc. to meet the needs of law enforcement personnel tasked with conducting sex crime investigations. This course meets the requirements for First Responders and Investigators as required under Public Act 99-0801: Sexual Assault Incident Procedure Act. This course examines critical techniques required to successfully investigate crimes of sexual assault and sexual abuse. Participants will study techniques of experienced investigators and discuss case studies and tactics used to bring investigations to a successful close using an evidence based, trauma informed, victim sensitive approach. Students will also discuss some of troubling issues which these crimes bring about and they will examine a range of non-rape sexual crimes. Other course topics to be addressed include the following: • Myths and misconceptions regarding these crimes • Interviewing victims using a trauma informed, victim sensitive approach • Developing interview strategies for sex offenders • Identifying, protecting, and preserving evidence • Developing a team approach • Special concerns for colleges and universities • Interpreting sex assault statutes COURSE GOALS The goals of this program include the following: • Reinforce the need for teamwork in the investigation of sex crime • Provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to conduct effective investigations of sex crimes • Establish guidelines to assist students in obtaining cooperation from victims during investigations of sex crimes • Ensure that students have knowledge of the evidence needed to successfully prosecute sex crimes and the steps necessary for protecting crime scenes until evidence is collected. • Provide students with insight on the motivation and rationale of sex crime offenders so that they may better develop interrogation strategies. COURSE PREREQUISITES: This course is appropriate for law enforcement personnel who will be responding to reports of sex crimes to conduct preliminary or actual investigations. There are two prerequisites for enrollment in this offering, the first affects the sponsoring agency, the second the student participant: 1. Agency: Only Chiefs, Sheriffs, and Public Safety Directors, or their designated representatives, may enroll student officers. Officers will NOT be allowed to enroll themselves. 2. Student Participants: Only personnel who are currently employed by a unit of local government in a sworn or civilian capacity will be permitted to attend this program. Full-time personnel from railroad, state or federal agencies not under the jurisdiction of the ILETSB may make application to attend this program. This course has been certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board and is not reimbursable by the ILETSB.
