According to recent statistics, 60 million people check Craigslist ads on a monthly basis and there are 60 million new classified ads posted every month. Unfortunately, the basic nature of Craigslist operations allows people to be fairly anonymous when posting, viewing, or responding to these ads. Furthermore, criminal activity of many different forms is common on Craigslist. This one day class will assist law enforcement investigators in developing methods for locating, identifying, and taking proper steps to preserve evidence and request the legal documents necessary for conducting thorough investigations. Through the examination of real-time postings, students will learn how to document what they find. Course topics to be addressed include the following: - Using proper searching techniques to identify online criminal activity - Case study analysis of frauds and scams (property crimes), stalking, bullying, narcotics violations, prostitution, and sex crimes - What information to subpoena for and follow-up subpoenas - Utilizing undercover telephone and SMS (text messaging) techniques - Definition of "Ghosting" and other terms students need to know - Obtaining additional information on e-mail addresses through legal process - Basic tracing of e-mail addresses ***STUDENTS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO BRING LAPTOPS/TABLETS/SMARTPHONES*** This course has been certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board. Please note it is not reimbursable by the ILETSB. The instructor for this program is Mr. Hale Guyer.
