Lead Homicide Investigator
This course will assist experienced investigators and major case task force personnel in understanding the requirements of solid follow-up homicide investigations. Instructors with substantial experience as homicide investigators, cold case unit supervisors, and commanders of a major case task force will lead students through a very practical, process-oriented approach to solving homicide cases. Key steps and processes to be addressed include: - Statements, confessions and interviews - Use of victim profiles - Crime scene protection issues - LEADS system maintenance and use - Accessing records using grand jury subpoenas - Pitfalls and Pinnacles: What an investigation can be - Major case issues and task force dynamics, development, and roles - Using the media - Supervision of investigations - Importance of proper evidence collection - Robbery and drug-, sexual-, and family-related cases - Use of telephone and forensic records - Search and seizure issues Students will be provided with a checklist for all investigative procedures, sample investigation forms, reports, and work sheets. **The subject matter of this course falls within the key training guidelines for the in-service training requirements for Lead Homicide Investigator.** **SB3491 amends the Illinois Police Training Act and requires the Illinois Law Enforcement Training Standards Board to conduct or approve a training program in sudden death or homicide investigation for the training of law enforcement officers of local government agencies. Officers completing this training program will be issued a certificate and may be assigned as lead investigators in such investigations. This course has been certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board and is not reimbursable by the ILETSB. ** For courses that are conducted, cancellations must be received by NEMRT 35 days prior to the start of class in order to avoid being billed.
