This course is designed to provide administrators and supervisors with an update of current issues regarding police officer use of force. Legal, policy, and procedural issues will be reviewed along with applicable statutory authority and case law. Illinois Compiled Statues, including 720 ILCS 5/7-5 Peace Officers Use of Force in Making Arrest, the Supreme Court cases of Tennessee v. Garner, Graham v. Connor, and Canton v. Harris will be detailed. Class materials include sample use of force and post incident investigation language. Upon completion of this course, administrators and supervisors will have re-examined key case law, statutory provisions, policy content, and procedural/training methods. This course has been certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board and is not reimbursable by the ILETSB.
