The number of people with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias is large and growing. Approximately 3.5 million Americans – most of them older adults – have dementia and this number is projected to double in the next 30 years in the absence of a cure or means of prevention. In Illinois, it is estimated that 220,000 citizens have dementia and that they are cared for by an additional 500,000 family members. Most people with dementia live in their homes with the help of these family caregivers, though it is estimated that 20 percent may live alone. This new half-day program will provide students with an overview of the numerous personal and social challenges faced by sufferers of these conditions, including problems with memory, thinking, language, and self-care, as well as vulnerability to crime and victimization. Topics to be addressed include: - Symptoms and stages, treatment, and risk factors for dementia - Behavioral disturbances - Driving issues - Wandering and missing persons - Abuse, neglect, financial exploitation, and self-neglect This program has been certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board. It is not reimbursable by the ILETSB. The instructor for this program is Mr. Daniel Kuhn, L.C.S.W., Vice-President of Education for All Trust Home Care, a home care agency specializing in the care of people with dementia that has offices in Hinsdale and Deerfield. For more than 40 years he has been a licensed clinical social worker and educator in the fields of dementia care and family caregiving in various care and research settings. He has authored or co-authored more than 50 publications and has given thousands of presentations throughout the United States and Canada. In 2015, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Illinois Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers.
