This course will provide students new to higher education law enforcement and security with a comprehensive overview of the primary duties of police officers and security personnel who work on college or university campuses. Issues unique to policing diverse, transient higher education populations will be addressed, including: - Communicating effectively with young adults - Interacting effectively with an institution’s administrative personnel - Identifying educational opportunities versus enforcement - Incorporating student programming as a means for engaging young adults - Utilizing non-conventional dispute resolution skills - Building mentoring relationships on campus - Industry-specific laws and regulations, including FERPA, HIPPA, and the Jeanne Clery Act - Ethics in higher education law enforcement - Campus security authority - Case law review relevant to residence hall room searches This course has been certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board. It is not reimbursable by the ILETSB. Instructor Paul Creekmore served as Deputy Chief of Police for Benedictine University. He is a graduate of the School of Police Staff and Command and holds a B.A. in Business Administration. Paul has served in patrol and command staff positions and has worked in Administration, Internal Affairs, and Problem Oriented Policing. He is a firearms, ASP, O.C. and P.P.C.T. instructor, is an ILEAP- Accreditation Assessor and has also served in Park District and Railroad policing. Formerly an Assistant Director of Campus Safety at North Central College, Paul now serves as Director of Safety and Security at Midwestern University. Director Creekmore wrote an amendment to 110 ILCS 1020/1 and testified before the Higher Education Committee of the Illinois House to expand police powers for private universities.
