This interactive 8-hour course has been designed to meet the practical needs of a Public Information Officer or other police personnel assigned to create, implement, and manage a social media strategy for a law enforcement agency. While creating a social media account for a law enforcement agency only takes a few clicks, understanding the legal requirements, civil rights considerations, public relations implications, and devising and maintaining a consistent strategy require foresight and training. Topic to be addressed include: - Overview of law enforcement use of social media - Illinois government records law and model policies - Updates in the legal landscape concerning civil rights and social media - Navigating the negativity on social media - Creating a positive social media strategy - Managing Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts - Overview of other social media options - Creating engaging content to increase the reach of your message - Avoiding pitfalls/problems with social media - Managing social media in a crisis PLEASE NOTE: Students are encouraged to bring smart phones, tablets, and laptops to class so they may actively follow along with the day's instruction. This class is certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training Standards Board. It is not reimbursable by the ILETSB.
