42 USC, Section 1983, is a federal statute which allows citizens/suspects to successfully sue officers for violation of their civil rights. Officers are becoming increasingly more vulnerable to suit under Section 1983. Consequently, they must familiarize themselves with the rules related to civil rights actions, particularly those based on 4th Amendment rights. Officers attending this class will learn how to avoid these suits and, if sued, how to avoid liability. Please note: It is strongly recommended that officers attending this program should already have completed an Arrest, Search, and Seizure course of instruction. This course has been certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board and is not reimbursable by the ILETSB.
