This one day, 8 hour class has been designed to provide students with the skills needed to effectively manage the field training process at their agencies, regardless of the model used. From selection of FTO's to the training of new officers, this course will cover the steps and controls necessary to ensure that the program is effective and legally defensible. Topics to be addressed include the following: - Why proper supervision and management of the field training process is important - The agency's responsibility to supervise the process - Management issues common to all field training programs, including selection, evaluation, retention, training, training failures, scheduling, and burnout - Management issues unique to Evaluative Programs, including DOR's, standards used, and reporting - Management issues unique to coaching and mentoring programs, including evaluation methods, review of training matrices, scheduling, and reporting Instructor James Wagner holds the rank of Lieutenant and currently serves as the Special Services Bureau Commander for the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office. He has been a Police Trainer for 22 years focusing on the areas of Leadership, Ethics and Training. James has been an FTO since 1992 and has managed Field Training for the Sheriff’s Office since 2005. James is a graduate of SPSC Class 233 and FBINA Class 235. This course has been certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board. It is not reimbursable by the ILETSB.
