This 40 hour program acquaints newly sworn or part-time officers with the physical, legal, and moral hazards associated with the use of firearms. The course provides specific safety rules for handling firearms. Through supervised practical exercises, officers will enhance their ability to use a firearm as a conditioned response. Successful completion of this course fulfills the requirements of 50 ILCS 710, “The Illinois Peace Officer Firearms Training Act”. Students must pass written and practical exams with a minimum score of 70% to receive a certificate of completion. In addition, each instructor must be completely satisfied with the abilities of the students to use their weapons in a safe manner. When enrolling a full or part-time Officer in this program, please do the following: 1. Provide him/her with a copy of the Participant's Information Sheet 2. Fax the following forms (found in the Registration Information section of this website) to NEMRT’s Registrar: Ms. Terri Hancock at (630) 229-0206: • Consent for Participation in 40 Hour Mandatory Firearms Training • A copy of the Officer's Form E. The original Form E must be on file in the offices of the Illinois Law Enforcement Training Standards Board • An Indemnification Agreement signed by your Chief or appropriate local official Agencies wishing to enroll Auxiliary Officers in this program are required to do the following: 1. Fax a copy of your local unit of government’s Enabling Ordinance for auxiliary officers to the Illinois Law Enforcement Training Standards Board at (217) 524-5350 so that they may review and approve your Auxiliary Officers’ eligibility to attend this training 2. Provide your Officer with a copy of the Participant’s Information Sheet 3. Fax the following forms (found in the Registration Information section of this website) to NEMRT Registrar: Ms. Terri Hancock at (630) 229-0206: • Consent for Participation in 40 Hour Mandatory Firearms Training • A copy of the Officer's Form E. The original Form E must be on file in the offices of the Illinois Law Enforcement Training Standards Board • An Indemnification Agreement signed by your Chief or appropriate local official All pre-registrations for this program must be accompanied by the forms listed above, especially the copy of your officer's Form E (as submitted to the Illinois Law Enforcement Training Standards Board). If NEMRT and the ILETSB do not receive these forms at least 7 business days before class, your officer(s) will not be allowed to attend the program. This is the strict policy of the Illinois Law Enforcement Training Standards Board. No exceptions are permitted. PLEASE NOTE: Pre-registration for this program will close 7 business days prior to the start of class to ensure that all necessary paperwork has been received by NEMRT and the ILETSB. Courses meet from 6 - 10p.m. on the first two sessions, then from 8a.m. to 4p.m. on the remaining four sessions. Participants are to bring their weapon, ammunition, and other required equipment. Please make certain all equipment is in proper working condition. Classroom instruction is held in the evening. You are required to bring notebooks, pens or pencils. DO NOT BRING WEAPONS OR AMMUNITION TO CLASSROOM SESSIONS. Range instruction is held on Saturdays and Sundays. You are required to bring the following to the range: - Service weapon in safe firing condition - Duty holster - 550 rounds ammunition (factory or reload) - Eye and ear protection - Shotgun in safe firing condition - Appropriate clothing for outdoor range (depending on class location) - Cleaning kit for your service weapon - Bag lunch or money to purchase meal This course has been certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board and is not reimbursable by the ILETSB. ** Cancellations for this course must be received by NEMRT 35 days prior to the start of the program in order to avoid being billed.
