This intensive 4 day program is designed to educate individuals to become nationally-certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians.  This curriculum was designed through a partnership between SAFE KIDS, NHTSA, and the National Child Passenger Safety (CPS) Board.  This course provides excellent supplemental training for Crash Reconstructionists or anyone tasked with the investigation of severe or fatal motor vehicle crashes involving children.  

Participants will learn how to select and install appropriate child safety restraint systems, teach caregivers how to safety utilize occupant protection systems in motor vehicles, teach caregivers how to install child restraint systems in vehicles, restrain children according to child passenger safety best practice guidelines, utilize resources for retrieving information related child passenger safety, respond appropriately to relevant legal and ethical issues, and serve as a community resource.

On the final day of the course there will be an actual child seat check-up event in which class participants will utilize their new skills while being evaluated as instructors.  Upon completion of the program, the new CPS Technicians will be able to provide education to parents regarding the safe transportation of children in vehicles and to the community through oral presentations and check in events.

- Relevant federal legislation and safety standards
- Crash dynamics
- Vehicle occupant protection systems
- Selection, installation, and use of child passenger restraints
- Organizing and coordinating community check-up events
- Participating in a child seat check-up event

Written and performance examinations are given throughout the program.  Participation in every course activity and successful performance on both examinations will lead to national certification as a Child Passenger Safety Technician. 

PLEASE NOTE:  There is an $95.00 course fee for the SAFE KIDS Certification.  This fee covers the cost of maintaining the technician certification online, printing costs, class supplies, course updates, and audits.

This course has been certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.  It is not reimbursable by the ILETSB.
