This simple, practical course will assist instructors in developing effective close quarter defensive fighting techniques and then applying them when fighting on the ground.  Whether overpowered, off-balance, or injured, this course will give students the tactical advantage needed to survive.  Officers who complete this class will have a useful, practical, and effective array of techniques to provide in future training exercises.      Participants will learn how to increase their mobility, protect their firearms and bodies, and defeat attackers.  It is intended for officers who have some prior experience in defensive tactics or who have previously attended the Foundational Defensive Tactics end user class.    

After reviewing fundamental techniques, students will practice instructing each other on the following topics:    
- Police officer use of force law (720 ILCS 5/7-5), U.S. Supreme Court case law     (Tennessee v. Garner and Graham v. Connor) and how they apply to physical force  
- Facing offenders who are skilled in mixed martial arts  
- Body mechanics issues of balance, mobility, and power  
- Economy of motion, using time efficiently without wasted motion, and moving     productively  
- Defensive body stances and how they relate to mobility, balance, and power  
- Blocking and counter-striking  
- Closed fist versus open hand strikes and the 'heavy hand'  
- Elbow strikes in close quarters  
- Target locations of the body (high, middle, low)  
- Choke releases  
- Weapon defenses and retention  
- Defensive ground positions 
- Strikes and redirects from ground position  
- Simple, effective control tactics    

This course has been certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.  It is not reimbursable by the ILETSB.
