This course will provide officers with an overview of the skills needed to utilize basic traffic crash investigative techniques and procedures. While this course is primarily intended as an update and review for patrol officers who handle routine traffic crash investigations on a daily basis within the state of Illinois, it will also serve as an excellent introduction to more advanced crash investigation techniques. Topics to be addressed include the following: The purpose of traffic crash investigation Defining Is it a traffic crash Importance of managing the crash scene and preserving evidence The difference between "reporting" and "investigation" Illinois Traffic Law relative to traffic crashes/accidents, including recent case law Common traffic violations which contribute to traffic crashes/accidents Proper completing a SR 1050 State of Illinois Traffic Crash Report Proper use an I.D.O.T. Traffic Crash Investigation Template Recognition of the importance of basic documents of evidence, field sketches, and photography Traffic enforcement measures which may assist in reducing traffic accidents/crashes This course has been certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board and is not reimbursable by the ILETSB.
