This course is the third level in a series of North East Multi Regional Training traffic crash investigation courses. The emphasis of this course is to build upon the theories and techniques learned in NEMRTs Basic Traffic Crash Investigation-Level 1 and Traffic Crash Investigation Level 2 courses. This class will delve into the more advanced concepts of traffic crash investigations along with more complex vehicle dynamics such as acceleration/deceleration factors and airborne situations. Students will learn to estimate speeds from falls, vaults, and flips and the calculation of kinetic energy and linear momentum. Students will also learn more advanced techniques to evaluate vehicle lamps, tires, and damage to help determine vehicle behaviors during the collision. Much of the coursework will be spent using more advanced acceleration/deceleration factors and perception/reaction times to determine time/distance relationships for colliding vehicles. Other concepts covered in NEMRT's Basic Traffic Crash Investigation-Level 1 and Traffic Crash Investigation-Level 2 courses will be revisited and expanded upon. Course topics will include: Speed estimates from kinetic energy, skid marks, scuffmarks and airborne situations Vehicle dynamics and motion Time, distance, and motion equations Conservation of momentum equations Center of mass calculation Vehicle lamp examination Tire damage evaluation Vector sum analysis Prerequisite Students must have completed NEMRTs Basic Traffic Crash Investigation-Level 1 and Traffic Crash Investigation-Level 2 or its equivalent for attendance to this course. To satisfy the prerequisite requirement for equivalency, students may be required to provide documentation for evaluation prior to final acceptance in this course. Required equipment to bring to class: Calculator with square root, sine/co-sine, and parentheses () functions Metal Drawing Compass Work clothes for outside activities (including inclement weather) Reflective Safety Vest Recommended equipment to bring: Camera and equipment to document field exercises 100 ft steel tape measure A Three-ring binder for handouts will be provided by NEMRT the first day of class. You should review all formulas and work from your required prerequisite courses prior to class. All course material and instructors will be provided by the Institute of Police Traffic Management, University of North Florida. Initial registration will be limited to NEMRT member agencies; a waiting list will be established for non-members. This course has been certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board and is not reimbursable by the ILETSB. ****Cancellations for this program must be received by NEMRT 35 days prior to the start of this class.*****
