This three-day course will provide attendees with a thorough overview of how cameras function, adjustments that can be made for various lighting conditions, proper exposure and composition, flash and non-flash photography, and will improve their overall skills as photographers. It is appropriate for those with limited familiarity with photography as well as those who have experience taking photos but who may want to improve their skills and develop a better functional understanding of why and how to adjust camera settings. Specific topics to be addressed in this course include the following: - Introduction to and fundamentals of photography - Camera controls, mechanics, and sensors - Lenses and lens functions - Digital media - Image quality and size - Exposure compensation - Shutter speed - Aperture (F-Stops) - ISO settings - Light meter usage - Histograms and shooting data - White balance - Flash photography - Two- and three-dimensional footwear/tire/tool impressions - Reflections, glass, and glare - Time exposure - Painting with light - Scales and scene markers - Field of view/composure - Accident scenes and injuries - Archiving images - Specialty photography including Luminol, macro, surveillance, death, and morgue scenes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to operate their cameras and flash devices in automatic, program, and manual modes, photograph crime scenes and related evidence with proper exposure and composure, improve the quality of their photos, and adjust for various conditions encountered at different kinds of scenes. Students are required to bring the following equipment on the FIRST DAY of class: - Digital camera (digital SLR preferred) and instruction manual - Normal lens (if using an SLR) approximately 35-50mm or zoom lens capable of that range - Macro lens if available (optional) - Batteries (or charger) for camera and flash - Digital media (2) - Off-camera flash and instruction manual - Remote flash cord (to connect flash to camera) - Tripod (if available) - Flashlight This course has been certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board. Instructor Scott Campbell is a 28-year veteran of the City of Milwaukee, Wisconsin Police Department who retired as a Shift Commander for their Identification Division. With more than 20 years of experience as a crime scene technician, fingerprint identification specialist and instructor, Scott has provided over 190 specialized training courses and lectures in 25 different states. He currently provides training for Ron Smith and Associates; State of Wisconsin Technical Colleges; North East Multi-Regional Training (Illinois); and The University of Arkansas – Criminal Justice Institute. He is a member of both the International Association for Identification and the Wisconsin Association for Identification. Scott is certified by the International Association for Identification as a Senior Crime Scene Analyst.
