PERF (Police Executive Research Foundation) and the Reno Police Department developed this adult learning model as an alternative to the current field training officer programs. It is known as the Reno Model, after Reno, Nevada. Those attending will learn how to train the new recruits, incorporating contemporary adult education methods and problem solving approaches. Traditional duties of policing are still emphasized, but with a variety of methods requiring the recruit to invest in learning the job in more meaningful ways. P.T.O's challenge recruits to think creatively and are encouraged to use community resources to respond to crime or maintain order in the community. Evaluations take place in a number of ways, including: - Informal assessments of daily activities - Utilizing journal entries and dialogue - Weekly coaching and training reports - Problem-based learning exercises within a four-phased training program - Neighborhood portfolio exercise - Week-long midterm evaluation - Week-long final examination - Board of Evaluators assessment of trainee (if recommended by a department's policy) Comprehensive learning manuals, forms, processes and recommendations are given to all participants in order to assist in transitioning from a current F.T.O. model to this P.T.O. model. This course has been Certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board. REQUIRED EQUIPMENT: computer capable of connecting to a Wi-Fi network to reach the internet and a jump drive or other portable media device
