The largest percentage of any police department is comprised of the patrol division. Patrol officers are often faced with situations requiring special care, advanced tactics, and the ability to work as a team to bring unstable situations to peaceful resolution. In any police agency, the lives of innocent persons and civilians represent the highest priority, with fellow law enforcement officers a close second priority. Maintaining these priorities during high risk, rapidly-evolving dynamic situations oftentimes requires specialized tactics to mitigate danger, particularly when tactical team response is delayed or not possible. The purpose of this one day, 8 hour course is to provide officers and supervisors assigned to their departments' patrol divisions with strategies and tactics that can be used during all patrol operations ranging from low risk/high frequency to high risk/low frequency events. Topics to be addressed include the following: - The importance of responding as a coordinated team to all types of situations - Various components of incident planning - The seven critical steps of an ICS incident response - Equipment considerations for different circumstances - Boyd's "OODA Loop" and how it relates to action versus reaction - Appropriate flanking techniques - Priority of fire - Cover and concealment considerations - Safe techniques for suspect management - The importance and functions of inner and outer perimeters in various situations - The function of a Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) independent of perimeter positions - Various searching techniques for multiple and single officer searches STUDENTS SHOULD BRING THE FOLLOWING ITEMS TO CLASS: - Duty belt - NO AMMUNITION IN WEAPONS OR ON THEIR PERSON - Long pants - Closed toe shoes - Neoprene gloves - Something to drink This course has been certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board. It is not reimbursable by the ILETSB.
