Developed by the National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare, Mental Health First Aid USA is an 8 hour course that introduces students to a 5 step action plan encompassing the skills, resources, and knowledge needed to assist individuals in crisis connect with appropriate professional, peer, and self-help care. This course provides attendees with an examination of the unique risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems, builds understanding of the importance of early intervention, and, most importantly, teaches individuals how to help someone in crisis or experiencing a mental health challenge.   

Students will review potential risk factors and warning signs for a range of mental health problems, including depression, anxiety/trauma, psychosis and psychotic disorders, eating disorders, substance use disorders, and self-injury.  The prevalence of various mental health disorders in the U.S. and the need for reduced community stigma will also be discussed.  

This course is taught to police, first responders, corrections officers, 911 dispatch staff, firefighters, and other public safety audiences around the country.  It provides attendees with more response options for deescalating incidents and better understand mental illness so that they might respond to mental health -related calls appropriately and without compromising safety.  Approximately 20,000 public safety professionals have taken this course, including personnel from the Philadelphia, D.C., and Seattle Police Departments, as well as numerous smaller and rural agencies.   

PLEASE NOTE:  Students attending this program will be certified in Mental Health First Aid after successfully completing the course and passing a written examination.  Certifications are effective for 3 years.  

This course has been certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.  It is not reimbursable by the ILETSB.
