This new 3-day (24 hour) course has been designed to meet the practical needs of the uniformed patrol officer who has supervisory responsibilities. ATTENDING OFFICERS NEED TO BRING OR HAVE ACCESS TO THEIR DEPARTMENT AGENCY OPERATIONS AND PROCEDURES. (General Orders) This program will challenge the Officers-in-Charge and Field Training Officers to evaluate their leadership styles within the context of the patrol setting. Management of numerous patrol challenges will be discussed within a highly interactive setting. Safe and proper responses to these situations will be particularly stressed. The main goal of this course is to provide a forum in which students may evaluate their personal leadership styles as well as their responses to various patrol challenges faced by the Officers in Charge. Patrol Officers who serve as Officers-in-Charge, Field Training Officers, and newly-appointed Sergeants would all benefit from this program. Topics will include: Leadership Individual leadership skills for law enforcement officers/supervisors. Ethics and Integrity Procedural Challenges Jurisdiction-discipline-use of force-death notification-hostage/barricaded subject- Psychiatric emergencies-domestic violence-vehicle pursuits-active assailant- Reporting unusual occurrence to command staff and many others Understanding Explicit and Implicit bias, community relations. Communications in the law enforcement environment Initial Response to deaths and unique situations Crime scene integrity. Search and seizure issues Identify -- Who, When, Where, What, Why, and How Initial response by first responding officers and supervisors. Intervention and Rendering aid. Review Illinois statutes and an officers responsibility to intervene another officer in certain circumstances and providing aid to a person injured. Response to Critical Incidents Establishment of incident command, Setting up perimeters, Manpower, time, equipment. Case Studies Identifying leadership styles, the decision-making process, taking the alternate course of action.
