How does all this information relate to the Juvenile Officer’s role? Alcohol and drug use affects every level of interaction Juvenile Officers have with minors. The correlation between juvenile delinquency and substance abuse is a well-documented reality that will be faced, eventually, by every Juvenile Officer on the job. By recognizing predictors for and signs of substance abuse, today’s J.O. will be better equipped to assist youths in the grip of addiction or use behaviors. Efforts which prevent access to drugs and alcohol by the underaged will sow future rewards such as lower juvenile crime rates and decreased incidences of accidental injury, deaths, and suicides.
