UNIT VI – JUVENILE SEX OFFENDER REGISTRATION (730 ILCS 150/2)

Public Act 95-0658, which took effect on October 11, 2007, modifies registration requirements for juvenile sex offenders. Specifically, a juvenile delinquent who has been adjudicated as a sex offender is required to register with his or her local police department’s chief of police (or his designee) or the county sheriff for the following time periods:

  1. Two years for misdemeanor offenses

  2. Five years for felony offenses
At the end of either mandatory registration period, the minor may petition the court to terminate the registration requirement. The court may, upon hearing, terminate registration if the juvenile poses no risk to the community based upon a preponderance of the evidence.

It should be noted that these changes are retroactive to any prior cases in which a juvenile has been adjudged and required to register as a sex offender.

Remember, requirements for sex offenders change quite frequently. Always be sure to check the most current registration requirements.
