UNIT III - MINORS REQUIRING AUTHORITATIVE INTERVENTION ARTICLE III - 705 ILCS 405/3)

This unit of instruction will examine Article III of the Juvenile Court Act which encompasses Minors Requiring Authoritative Intervention (to be identified herein as MRAI). Specifically, this unit will identify the key elements of the MRAI designation, a Law Enforcement Officer's duties when taking a MRAI into custody, time constraints of custody, crisis intervention, and the elements of shelter care and adjudicatory hearings. Issues related to truant minors in need of supervision will be touched upon as well.

This unit will enable students to use and apply terminology and police procedure that should be used when handling a minor who is absent from home without consent and/or is beyond the control of a parent. Students will become familiarized with the role a Crisis Intervention Services Agency can play in assisting them in handling MRAI cases, as well as other services and protections provided them by the court, such as a Guardian ad Litem and Orders of Protection. Additionally, students will be able to cite legal requirements and court restrictions pertaining to MRAI investigations. Finally, students will be able to provide assistance to a minor who is considered to be a chronic truant from school and identify the different types of dispositions available to the court that may be imposed upon such truant minors.
