UNIT II - ABUSED, NEGLECTED, OR DEPENDENT MINORS (ARTICLE II, 705 ILCS 405/2)

This unit will comprehensively examine Article II of the Illinois Juvenile Court Act, including definitions of terminology such as Abuse, Neglect, Dependent Minors, Temporary Custody, and Shelter Care. Furthermore, different types of dispositions the court can impose upon a family will be identified, as will the definition of the term Mandated Reporter and the legal responsibilities this designation entails.

This unit will enable students to identify the Law Enforcement Officer's role and responsibilities when handling Abused, Neglected, or Dependent minors.

Students will become conversant on issues related to court system time restraints, services and protections provided to minors who appear before the court, the role a Guardian Ad Litem plays within the juvenile justice system, Orders of Protection and safe placements considered by the court. Finally, students will become familiarized with those situations requiring notification of the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.
