Child Development
Theories of Human Development: Many theories exist as to how and why children reach different developmental stages as they grow from infancy. Some are based upon the influence that environmental factors exert over a child’s development. Others are considered “epigenetic” theories. In other words, they are based upon the impact that a child’s genetic makeup has on his or her development. These mindsets comprise the opposing sides of the classic “nature vs. nurture” question. Most psychologists today agree that both factors should be considered when attempting to explain the wide range of human behavior.
Familiarity with different developmental theories prepares juvenile officers to better understand and respond to the juveniles with whom they come into contact. They provide context and structure to the behaviors and motivations of children. Again, it should be noted that different theories may apply to different situations – no single theory can account for every behavior. As officers gain experience, they will come into contact with doctors, nurses, social workers, psychologists, and teachers who are proponents of different theoretical styles. None of these individuals is inherently right or wrong. Rather, their differing perspectives can provide great insight and value when determining how cases should be handled.
