The Scope of the Problem in Illinois: According to statistics compiled by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, 111,890 children were reported as being abused or neglected in 2008. Of this number, 30,047 cases were substantiated by DCFS personnel. Law enforcement officers provided 38% of the reports received in these confirmed cases – the highest percentage among all mandated reporters.
