3. Educational Neglect is characterized by parental inability or unwillingness to ensure that their child meets attendance and performance requirements of her school district. Subcategories of educational neglect include:
- Permitted, chronic truancy: Permitting habitual absenteeism from school, at least 5 days a month.
- Failure to enroll or other truancy: Failing to register children for school or to provide home schooling to a child of mandatory school age and causing a child to miss at least 30 days of schooling for no valid reason.
- Inattention to special education needs: Refusal to allow or failing to obtain recommended special education services, failure to follow through with treatment for a child’s diagnosed learning disorder or other special education need without reasonable cause.
