Child Sexual Abuse
4. Adolescence – 8th through 12th Grades:
- Children in this age group are more independent and often have problems with authority figures. Their reactions tend to be strong and very intense.
- If a high school age child discloses abuse, it has probably been going on for some time. Children don’t generally begin to be abused at this age unless the offender is a teacher.
- Because abuse has likely been going on for some time with children in this group, they will begin looking for an escape through rebellion, running away, or turning to delinquent or criminal behavior.
- If an officer comes in contact with a troubled teen, he should remember to ask if something is wrong. Though the child may dismiss the officer, a seed has been planted. If the child decides to disclose, that officer may be the one to whom the child turns.
