Social Control Theory: Developed by Travis Hirschi, this theory hypothesizes that social bonds formed in school, church, and family influence human behavior to such an extent that the individual conforms to the expectations of society. Strong social relationships are thought to discourage anti-social and criminal behaviors. Conversely, weaker relationships are believed to increase the individual’s potential for engaging in criminal behavior.
